The fines collected for violating Minnesota’s seat belt use requirement are deposited in the state treasury and credited to the Emergency Medical Services Relief Account. Ninety percent of the money in the account is distributed to the eight Regional Emergency Medical Services Systems designated by the Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board. The board of directors of each EMS region is in charge of establishing criteria for how the funding is spent to support, including:
- Personnel education and training
- Equipment and vehicle purchases
- Operational expenses of emergency life support transportation services
